Church Hurt

When Mar gets hired at the church she grew up in, she’s reunited with her onetime youth group besties Faith, who is now head of People Operations, and Julie, who now serves as an outspoken (and openly bisexual) volunteer with progressive goals. Though the three once bonded over Relient K songs and scripture, they now have to reconcile their very different faith journeys in the intervening years. Old wounds and new points of view disrupt ministry efforts as queerness and the non-denominational movement collide. - New Play Exchange

Submission Instructions

  • Headshot and resume

  • A one minute contemporary monologue

  • To be considered for JULIE, additionally include a one minute clip of you singing a song in any style while accompanying yourself on guitar or piano

Audition Date & Time

  • All submissions are due by Monday, August 3 @ 11:59pm

  • In-person callbacks will be held Sunday, August 16 & Monday, August 17

Pay Rate

  • $400 for actors

  • $200 for understudies (guaranteed performance)

Character Description

  • FAITH: Late 20s - Early 30s, Very Christian Girl Autumn. Earnest. Anxious.

  • JULIE: Late 20s - Early 30s. A nerd about The Bible and boygenius. Persistent. Empathetic. [Sings & plays guitar or piano]

  • MAR: Late 20s - Early 30s. Helplessly butch. Guarded. Cynical.

*All roles can be played by any race/ethnicity.

Time Commitment

  • Rehearsals: September 1 - October 11 (4x/wk. 3x weekday evening + 1 weekend day)

  • Tech: October 13 - October 20

  • Previews: October 21 - 23

  • Opening: Saturday, October 24 @ 7:30pm

  • Run: October 24 - November 22 (21 performances / Mon & Thurs-Sat @ 7:30pm, Sun @ 3pm)

Production Locations

  • Callbacks and rehearsals will take place at The Hearth, 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.

  • Performances will take place at The Edge Off Broadway, 1133 W Catalpa Ave.
